About Malvika Iyer

Beginnings: Malvika spent her childhood in Bikaner, Rajasthan, where her father worked as an engineer. She enjoyed a beautiful upbringing, filled with memories of exploring the city, savoring local cuisine, and donning Rajasthani clothes. She was a leader among her colony friends, engaging in activities like kicking a ball, flying kites, and even training in Kathak for over seven years.
The Tragic Incident: On May 26, 2002, everything changed. Unaware that an ammunition depot explosion had scattered bomb pieces in the vicinity, Malvika picked up what she thought was a blunt object to fix her torn jeans. It turned out to be a grenade, and the explosion cost her both hands. She also suffered severe leg injuries, including multiple fractures, nerve paralysis, and hypoesthesia.
Road to Recovery: Bedridden for over 18 months, Malvika underwent numerous surgeries during her recovery. Her initial goal was simply to walk again. As she progressed, she set new milestones: climbing stairs, operating the remote with her elbow, and adapting to life without hands. Her resilience and determination were unwavering.
Beyond Survival: Malvika’s story didn’t end with survival. She transformed into a force for change. Today, she wears multiple hats:
- Social Worker: Advocating for disability awareness and an inclusive society.
- PhD Scholar: Pursuing her academic interests.
- Motivational Speaker: Inspiring countless others with her talks.
- Global Shaper: A part of the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers Community.
Lessons from Failure: Malvika’s journey taught her to rise above failure. Unlike those around her who chased success, she embraced setbacks as stepping stones. Her resilience became her superpower.
