A salute to the true Indian freedom fighter : Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, Bengal Presidency (British India), was a prominent Indian nationalist leader. His unwavering defiance of British authority during India’s struggle for independence made him a hero among many Indians.
Bose’s journey began with an Anglo-centric education, and after college, he traveled to England to take the Indian Civil Service examination. Although he excelled in the first exam, he chose not to take the routine final exam, citing nationalism as a higher calling.
However, it was during World War II that Bose’s legacy took a complex turn. He formed alliances with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, seeking their support to overthrow British rule in India. The honorific “Netaji” (Bengali for “Respected Leader”) was first applied to him in Germany by Indian soldiers of the Indische Legion and German and Indian officials in the Special Bureau for India in Berlin. This title is now widely used throughout India.Despite his wartime associations, Bose’s commitment to India’s independence remained steadfast.
He founded the Indian National Army (INA) in 1942, which aimed to liberate India from British rule. The INA alongside Japanese forces in Southeast Asia, but their military campaign face challenges and setbacks.Tragically, on August 18, 1945, Bose’s life cut short when his plane crash in Japanese-occupied Taiwan. He suffered third-degree burns and succumbed to his injuries. His death remains a subject of speculation and intrigue.Bose’s legacy is multifaceted. While he is celebrated for his unwavering spirit and dedication to India’s freedom, his wartime associations have also left a vexed legacy.
