In April 2011, Arunima Sinha, a national-level volleyball player from India, faced a life-altering tragedy. She was thrown out of a running train by robbers who were after her gold chain. Her left leg was crushed by the passing trains, and it had to be amputated. Despite this devastating setback, Arunima didn’t give up on her dreams.
On May 21st, 2013, Arunima achieved the seemingly impossible: she summited Mount Everest. In her passionate talk titled “On Top of the World,” she shares her inspiring journey. Here are the key points from her remarkable story:
- The Tragedy: Arunima’s life took a drastic turn when she lost her leg due to the train incident. But instead of succumbing to despair, she found inspiration in Yuvarj Singh, an international cricket player who had successfully battled cancer. Arunima decided that she would climb Mount Everest.
- The Ascent: Arunima’s determination led her to become the first female amputee (and the first Indian amputee) to conquer Everest. She faced immense challenges, including extreme cold, lack of oxygen, and the presence of dead bodies along the treacherous route. Yet, she persisted.
- Beyond Everest: Arunima didn’t stop at Everest. She went on to climb other peaks, including Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa and Mt. Elbrus in Europe. Her resilience and courage inspired countless others.
- Honors and Recognition: Arunima received numerous awards and recognitions for her extraordinary achievements. But her mission didn’t end there.
