About Author
Eckhart Tolle, who was born Ulrich Leonard Tölle on February 16, 1948, is a renowned spiritual teacher and best-selling author. He is a German-born resident of Canada. Tolle is best known as the author of “The Power of Now”. Also known for “A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose.” In 2008, The New York Times even called Tolle “the most popular spiritual author in the United States.” Furthermore, in 2011, he was listed by Watkins Review as the most spiritually influential person in the world.
Tolle moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1995, and he currently divides his time between Canada and California. Moreover, he began writing his first book, “The Power of Now,” in 1997. It reached The New York Times Best Seller list in 2000.
James Beverley is a professor of Christian Thought and Ethics at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto. He says that Tolle’s worldview conflicts with central Christian convictions. Beverley believes Tolle denies Christianity’s core principles. Specifically, Tolle claims there is no ultimate distinction between humans, God, and Jesus.
John Stackhouse is a former professor of theology and culture at Regent College in Vancouver. Stackhouse says Tolle appeals to a specific segment of the population. He argues that Tolle offers a supreme religion. This religion purports to draw from various established religions. Stackhouse believes this approach satisfies people’s spiritual needs.
Both professors criticize Tolle’s spiritual teachings. They argue that his views differ significantly from traditional Christian beliefs. Tolle’s philosophy blends elements from multiple religions. Beverley and Stackhouse think this blending can mislead people. They assert that Tolle’s teachings lack theological consistency.
Overall, their criticisms highlight the tension between Tolle’s ideas and evangelical Christianity.
“The Power of Now” and “A New Earth” sold an estimated three million and five million copies respectively in North America by 2009. Consequently, Tolle’s influence has been profound, both in terms of book sales and spiritual impact.
