Meet Tejaswani :14-Year Old Girl From Odisha Designs Bicycle That Can Run Without Pedals….

14-year-old girl Tejaswani Priyadarshani from Rourkela, Odisha, has designed an innovative device that gives a whole new dimension to a bicycle by allowing it to run on air.

Instead of pedals, the “air bike” runs by propelling air. With a 10 kg cylinder of compressed air mounted on the bicycle carrier, it can run up to a distance of 60 km.

Tejaswani’s innovation comes at a time when the whole world is trying to tackle global climate woes by cutting down the usage of fossil fuels extracted from resources like coal, oil, gas, petrol and diesel; opening greater possibilities of using renewables like solar and wind energy.

Tejaswani, a class-XI student of Saraswati Sishu Vidya Mandir of Rourkela, had this idea when she visited a bicycle-repair shop and saw the mechanics using air guns to detangle knots in a bicycle tyre.

She was helped by her father to carry out the experiments. After experimenting with several design processes, they bought an air tank with an inlet for filling water. A measuring dial was fitted with the tank. A starting knob and a safety valve were also connected to release excess air.

When the knob is turned on, the air from the cylinder is transferred to the air gun placed near the paddle that rotates the gear with the help of six different blades, which also sets the cycle in motion.

The technique used in the cycle can also be applied to motorcycles and cars. The bicycle can also be used by differently abled people. Tejaswani has also won several accolades for her brilliant invention.

Principal of Saraswati Sishu Vidya Mandir, Mr Sunil Kumar Patel , said, “Every year we asks students to work on different science projects. Among all the projects received this year, Tejaswani’s project was the best one. The school teachers and her father helped her immensely for this project. It will be showcased in several state and national level exhibitions.”

Imagine if this innovation gets used in motorcycles and cars, then people won’t have to spend much on their petrol and diesel bills.

The Don’t Give Up World  wishes Tejaswani the best in the forthcoming competitions and hopes that she continues to inspire everyone with her innovations.
