Meet Deepak Punia ,Milkman’s Son From Haryana Wins Gold At World Cadet Wrestling Championships

Haryana wrestler Deepak Punia, the son of a milkman, has won the gold medal in the 85 kg category of third World Cadet Wrestling Championships. He is now being touted as one of the future wrestlers of India who will replace the likes of Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt and bring laurels to the country.

Probably the biggest motivation for Punia to clinch the gold was his favourite drink — cow’s milk. It all started last month after Punia failed to win any medals from the junior world championship in France and returned home empty-handed. Upset by his performance, Punia’s father didn’t give him milk to drink. This event just triggered the zeal inside Punia and he promised his father that he won’t return from the cadet world championship empty-handed that was supposed to take place in Tbilisi in the second week of September.

The 17-year-old defeated wrestlers from Kyrgyzstan, Georgia and the USA. In the finals, Punia beat Nail Seyyar of Turkey. Punia became the third Indian to become cadet world champion, since the inception of the tournament in 2011.

Punia’s father used to take Punia to the local Akhada when he was seven-year-old. He found Punia to be dedicated and better than Punia. One of the biggest secrets of his success is obviously milk. Punia has been drinking four litres of milk every single day.

He had earlier won gold in the junior Asian championship and silver at the Asian cadet championships.

Punia  is one of the few young wrestlers who is been coached by Dronacharya Awardee Satpal Singh’s. He is now aiming for the 2020 Olympics.

The World Cadet Wrestling Championship is an under-18 wrestling tournament participated by both men and women from around the world. The 2016 edition is being held at Tbilisi in Georgia.

The Don’t Give Up World Team congratulates Deepak Punia for his success.
