Mandi doctor spends from own pocket for patients

Dr Uday Bhanu Rana

Giving frees us from the familiar territory of our own needs by opening our mind to the unexplained worlds occupied by the needs of others. Kudos to this humane doctor. Rare to find such gems.

Dr Uday Bhanu Rana, gynaecologist, posted in the Zonal Hospital here has shelled out Rs 12 lakh from his own pocket to provide the facility of total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) surgery for patients.

Even premier health institutions like IGMC-Shimla and Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, have no such facility.

“It gave me immense satisfaction when I performed the surgery of two women patients successfully,” said Dr Rana, who is being lauded for his generosity.

“I know these women will suffer less pain and recover fast. It is not money but recovery of the patients that matters for doctors and we have achieved this feat successfully which should be the commitment of any dedicated doctor,” he says.
Dr Rana said the surgery was conducted by private hospitals which cost anywhere between Rs 2 lakh and 3 lakh whereas it had been made available free of cost for the needy patients.

“The TLH surgery saves the patient from excessive blood loss and pain and facilitates fast recovery as compared to the old procedure of surgery,” added Dr Rana.

“I and my colleague Dr Sandeep were eager to provide the TLH facility to women patients in this hospital, who otherwise had to face weakness after the surgery,” he explained. Since the wait for the arrival of the machine in the hospital was proving to be too long, he decided to purchase it from my pocket.
