Inspirational Journey Of Dr Raju L Bhatia From Peon To Boss

This is a true rags-to-riches story of a man who once washed tea cups in a financial firm and later appointed as the HR chief of the same firm.

The man who once was struggled to complete his education is now one of the country’s most successful human resource consultant. He is the perfect example of success brought about by hard work and the ability to anticipate and adapt to change.

Yes, this story is about Dr Raju L Bhatia, a Change Management and Organisation Turnaround Specialist, who has the credit of designing the Tata human resource development network for the entire tata companies. Popularly known as ‘The HR Guru’, his life is a lesson in making the impossible possible.

Born and raised in a chawl in Mumbai, his father was a door-to-door salesman who had to support a large family. Because of weak economic condition of the family, Bhatia struggled a lot even to attend school. He somehow completed his primary education from a government school. Finally, at the age of 15, he started working as a peon in the bank to make a living and support his family.

Bhatia was well aware of the importance of education since childhood, so apart from working in the bank he also continued his education. He was attending college from 7 am to 10 am, working at the bank till 6 pm and then giving tuition to children from his chawl.

In graduation, he topped the Bombay University in commerce stream and successfully enrolled a seat in the prestigious Indian Institute of Managment (IIM).

A very good student at IIM, he won scholarships and went on to do his PhD in human resources from the University of Missouri. After the successful completion of PhD, he started his career in Tata exports in 1988.

Bhatia is also known for redesigning the Tata-HRD network for all Tata companies. After working with Tata group for more than a decade, he joined the same bank as Head of Human Resources where he was working as a peon. Bhatia was also associated with two multi-national financial firm Ernst& Young and McKinsey prior to setting up his own HR consultancy firm, Centre for Change Management in 1998.

Today, Bhatia is a renowned corporate consultant, author of many bestsellers and lecturer. Apart from this, he is also the founder of Centre for Change Management. Fun and Joy at Work caters to corporate houses in Indian and a few Asian countries in HR design and structure, change management processes, performance management systems, job evaluations, assessment centers, training, and management development etc. Dr Bhatia pioneered in bringing Emotional Intelligence to India.

This is all about the success story of a man whose success mantra is

“know what you are doing and do what you know and of course,

never ever give up your dream”.
