An Open Letter To Those Who Think Their Life “Sucks”

Sad Pug In Rain@dontgiveupworld

Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking
— MARCUS AURELIUS

If you are reading this then I can only assume you feel like your life sucks right now. Fortunately, I don’t even have to know you to know that this is a load of nonsense and I’m going to prove it to you.
I should be shocked by the number of people who think their lives are meaningless and joyless, but I’ve been there so I understand how easy it can be to believe.
That’s why I feel qualified to tell you that you’re wrong – and that you can change this downbeat perception of yourself.
As the Marcus Aurelius quote above says, it’s all in your way of thinking.
Do you want to know why it seems like your life sucks at the present time? It’s because you only see the dark, the discontent, the despair. Your work life, your relationships, your body image, your wealth and possessions, your health, your living conditions – I bet when you think about these things, you are filled with negativity.
You want a better job, better relationships, better looks, better things, better health, and a better house. All you do is focus on what could be better.
But you know what? Have you ever stopped to think about how things could be worse?
No, you haven’t, because your mind has got tunnel vision and all it wants to think about is how hard done by you are; how life has dealt you a rubbish hand.
You wish you were someone else; you look at your friends or people on TV and you imagine living their lives. In these dreams, you don’t see any problems, you only see the good.
But just because you can’t imagine the troubles these people have, it doesn’t mean that they don’t exist. After all…
Your enjoyment of life has little to do with what you have (or don’t have) and everything to do with your perception of these things.
Shocker.
You feel like you’ve heard this all before; but if you have, why haven’t you listened? Why are you still reading this article?
Because you haven’t yet managed to lock in this basic reality; your still have an “I wish I had better…” mindset.
You don’t yet believe that you are worthy of happiness; you believe that you are failing in life.
But what does failing really look like?

No man is a failure who is enjoying life
— WILLIAM FEATHER

Failure does not apply to the poor man who gives away his last dollar to someone else in need. Failure is not the person who lives life to the fullest despite a disability. Failure is not the street cleaner who does his job with a smile on his face and a song in his heart.
Failure is not seeing all the wonderful things that you have to be grateful for. Failure is overlooking the abundance that exists in each and every life.
But this leads us to a simple conclusion: failure can be turned into success with nothing more than a change of attitude.

The only disability in life is a bad attitude
— SCOTT HAMILTON

So I implore you – stop focusing all your attention on things that you wish were better and start paying close attention to all of the things that could be a lot worse.

You don’t enjoy your job? You could be unemployed.
You are unemployed? You could be a slave in another country.
Your home is small and basic? You could be homeless.
You are single? You could be in an unloving or abusive relationship.
You have a terminal illness? You could be dead already if it hadn’t been diagnosed when it was.
Add it all up and you’ll soon realize that, actually, you haven’t got it all bad – there are good things in your life that are worth being grateful for.
You’ll stop looking towards a “better” future and start appreciating all the wonderful things that the present has to offer.

Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into
— WAYNE DYER
As soon as you are able to tune into the abundance, you start to see life in a different light. You understand that you have so much more than you could have ever imagined – and most precious of all is your life itself.
Are you going to make an effort to do this?
Oh, you thought it would be easy? I’m afraid it takes effort to change the way your mind works. But, no matter how young or old you are, the brain is capable of rewiring itself over time and your very thoughts are the catalyst for such change.
If you keep thinking your life sucks, then those neural connections will keep getting stronger and stronger.

Conversely, if you change your attitude and start appreciating the abundance around you, then you form and reinforce those connections, and the positive mindset that comes from them.

Life is 10% of what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it— JOHN MAXWELL

No matter what obstacles life throws your way, how you view them will determine how successful you are at overcoming them. You reaction to life’s situations is paramount.
And in the end, how you react to life – how you respond to the inevitable ups and downs – is the only thing that you will always have control over.
So, please, whatever you do after reading this article, if you take just one thing from it, let it be this: life does not suck and it never will; you just need to alter your thoughts and persevere with the positivity because your mind will eventually change.
Modern society is full of people living their lives without truly appreciating the wonder of it all. Don’t let this be you; live a life full of appreciation and gratitude and you will never again think your life sucks.
